'Daybreakers' Opening Sequence Analysis

Daybreakers (2009) Dir. Spierig Brothers (Lionsgate)
There is a use of both continuity and montage editing to introduce the genre, storyline and setting. I particularly liked the sense of enigma used in this opening sequence.  I thought that the title sequence was very effective as it creates an eerie mood, which causes the audience to be in suspense. As the audience, it makes us wonder why it is all deserted and we anticipate a shock.  There is also the introduction to a few characters, including a young girl, police, homeless man, newsreaders and the main character. The use of the colours blue and orange juxtapose and create a sense of dystopia and the dimly lit and dark surroundings make it seem supernatural or creepy. The use of special effects is also important as it helps to increase the sense of enigma. The title sequence is also very good as the star names are incorporated into the setting and the constant tracking shots show us the surroundings and the location of the film. The use of close-up’s and long shots also keeps certain information hidden from the audience helping to increase the sense of enigma. The creepy music also helps to increase the sense of dystopia and helps reinforce the codes and conventions of the genre. The use of silence at the beginning of the clip puts the audience on edge and contrasts to the shrill scream from the girl. I thought this sequence was very effective as it had a great sense of enigma and successfully engage the audience and make them want to watch the film.
