'Legally Blonde' Opening Sequence Analysis

Legally Blonde (2004) Dir. Robert Leketic (MGM)

I liked the use of the montage to introduce the main character Elle (Reese Witherspoon). It uses invisible editing to compress time and introduce the parallel narratives. We can tell that the genre of this film is a rom-com due to the cinematography; for example, the use of pink and the font used for the titles and star names. There are also other conventions including the homecoming queen, university campus and sorority. The high key lighting creates a sense of equilibrium and the ‘perfect life’.  The song used also uses the ‘perfect day’ which portrays the ideas of this ‘perfect life’ the characters are living. I particularly like the fact that we do not see the main character until halfway through the opening sequence. We see subtle hints about what she is like from objects in her room for example the ‘homecoming queen’ sash.
